Social Work Clinical Supervision

Supervision sessions are guided by the supervises development goals (e.g. field education placement, accreditation type, professional development focus). Rates vary depending on role/income of supervisee.

The frequency of supervision will vary depending on your experience and role context. The AASW current recommendations are as follows:

  • Newly qualified social workers / Graduates: Fortnightly formal supervision (at least 60 minutes per session), with a minimum of half conducted on a one-on-one basis.

  • Experienced workers entering a new field or facing complex challenges: Fortnightly formal supervision until core competence and confidence are established.

  • Experienced client-facing practitioners: Monthly formal supervision (60 minutes per session) spread across the work year.

  • Experienced non-client-facing roles (e.g., policy, research, or management): A minimum of 10 hours of formal supervision or professional reflection per year.

  • Social work students on placement: 1.5 hours of formal supervision for every 35 hours in the field, with at least half as one-on-one time.
